Buy a Business or a Franchise -- SCORE Offers Free How-to Workshop
Can you afford to buy a business or a franchise? Can you afford not to? How much should you pay for a business? Is it possible to verify sales in a cash business? How can you finance the purchase? What is a fair buy/sell agreement? Can you protect yourself?
A FREE workshop, “Buying a Business or a Franchise,” sponsored by SCORE Chapter 36 of Monmouth County, will answer these questions and many more on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at the Middletown Library, 55 New Monmouth Road, Middletown, New Jersey, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
William Belgard, a franchise specialist, and Joseph Wasilewski, a CPA who specializes in the buying and selling of existing businesses, will offer practical advice in finding good business opportunities and what to avoid. SCORE members who have bought or sold businesses will discuss their experiences.
Some of the topics covered will be how to price a business, how to verify sales in a cash business, unique methods to finance the purchase, and how to structure a buy/sell agreement that is fair to both parties.
For further information contact SCORE at www.score36.org, or the Middletown Library at 732 671-3700 Ext. 320, or leave a message at the SCORE office on the Brookdale Community College campus at 732-219-9119. SCORE Chapter 36 is an affiliate of the Small Business Administration.

Hi! I don't live in New Jersey, but I was wondering if you could help me anyway. I'm looking to buy a business, but I'm not sure where to start or look for one. Would you be able to suggest a place to start (aside from my local CofC)? Thanks!
Genevieve, I suggest checking out your local Chamber of Commerce. They should be able to help you. It's also just a good way to network.
I also suggest looking at www.BizTrader.com. It's a global marketplace for small business. You can buy, sell, or invest in one. There's a wide selection of businesses. Definitely check it out sometime and good luck.
