Tax Filing Deadline Extended to April 17

The New Jersey Division of Taxation has announced that the due date for filing and payment of the 2006 New Jersey gross income tax returns will be extended to April 17, 2007, to correspond to the due date for Federal income tax returns.

For Federal income tax purposes, all individual taxpayers have extra time to file and pay income tax because April 15 falls on a Sunday and the next day is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. Previously, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) extended the filing and payment deadline to April 17 only for taxpayers in the District of Columbia and six eastern states served by an IRS processing facility in Massachusetts, where Patriots Day is observed on April 16, but in a recent notice the IRS determined that the entire country has the extended deadline. (Release, NJ Division of Taxation, 01/26/2007.)
