Dr. Mallamaci Named Chief Medical Officer of OHI

Dr. Carmen R. Mallamaci, Totowa, N.J., has been named chief medical officer for Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI), a federally qualified health center (FQHC) with locations at 101 Second Street, Lakewood and 301 Lakehurst Road, Toms River. As chief medical officer (CMO), Dr. Mallamaci will plan direct, and monitor the delivery of medical services for OHI. Among other duties, she will also assist Dr. Theresa Berger, the CEO, in implementing policies and in recruiting medical doctors and healthcare providers.

Before being named CMO, Dr. Mallamaci was assistant chief medical officer and director of pediatrics at North Hudson Community Action Corporation Health Center. At the Center, she was Physician Champion and Team Leader for the Asthma Collaborative, a pediatric director of Reach Out and Read, and was responsible for hospital coverage for seven sites. She also performed clinical duties and provided care for patients from birth to 17 years of age.

Dr. Mallamaci received her B.A. from NYU in 1983 and her MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, N.Y., in 1987. She completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pulmonary at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y.

She has been the recipient of the PREP Education Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics consecutively each year from 1993 through 1999. She also received the Lester R. Tuchman Award from Mount Sinai School of Medicine for demonstrating compassion and skill in clinical medicine.

Dr. Mallamaci, a native Spanish speaker whose parents were born in Cuba, is the first generation of her family to be born in the United States. She holds medical licenses in both New Jersey and New York, is a diplomat of the National Board of Examiners, and is board certified in pediatrics from the American Board of Pediatrics.
